Majority of Diabetics Neglect Vitamin D

A troubling European diabetes study indicates that the vast majority of diabetics are neglecting one of the essential nutrients for achieving lasting health. According to research conducted in Italy and published in the journal Diabetes Care, approximately 61% of people with type 2 diabetes suffer from chronic vitamin D deficiency. The findings are particularly troubling given past research showing that low levels of vitamin D can be a risk factor for heart disease. Researchers also estimated that nearly one third of diabetics are at high risk of developing heart disease, partially as a result of inadequate vitamin D intake. The study's authors concluded by urging regular and extensive vitamin D deficiency screening of all type 2 diabetics
