Cost Effective Personal Training

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, How can I bring my exercises to a new Level?

A. Let a pro give you the pointers you need to bring your workout to a new level. A certified trainer costs $50-60 per hour on average. If you can't swing the price, then split the cost with a friend. Most gyms have trainers available to answer questions about the machines and workouts available. There's also a plethora of fitness DVDs available for rent or purchase that can help you get a good visual idea of the proper form of workouts and exercises.

Glen's Bottom Line: Get Trusted Advice! Hire A Trainer!!!

The Best Workout Around

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, How do I know if I am doing my exercises right!

A. The best way to make the most of your workout is to ask a pro. Although personal trainers are expensive, they can be well worth the price. If a trainer does not fit into your budget, then it's still important to ask questions. If you're confused about how to perform an exercise properly, don't be afraid to ask. There are trainers at every gym to assist you. There are also many videos available for rent or purchase that can help teach you proper form. Another great option is to take a class and ask the instructor for some tips at the end. It is important to educate yourself on the exercises you are going to perform to maximize results and prevent injury.

Glen's Bottom Line: Hire a Trainer! You can't get this stuff from books!

Cardio & Strength Training: A One Two Punch

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, What order should I exercise first, strenght or cardio?

A. The order in which you perform your cardio and strength training is not as important as making sure you incorporate both into your routine. Ideally, it's best to keep cardio and strength training separate so you can give your best energy and effort for each type of training. But if you're doing both on the same day, then try to separate the two during the day. For example, start the morning off with a jog, then hit the gym later that night. If you have to combine the two in the same workout, then the order depends mostly on what you're trying to accomplish. For example, if you're trying to build muscle mass, then start off with your weight training workout and finish with cardio

Glen's Bottom Line: Do both!

Great Weight Loss Rewards

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, I am finally seeing results Can I cheat now?

A. You deserve a pat on the back, and you need to make it a point to get it. Setting milestones and rewarding yourself every time you meet them can help you achieve your ultimate goal. Try giving yourself a reward every time you meet a mini-milestone. Treat yourself to a candlelit soak in the tub, go see a movie with a friend, enjoy a new CD or give yourself a spa day. Celebrating the smaller victories will help make your fitness journey more fun and will help make your long-term fitness goals more attainable

Glen's Bottom Line: Reward yourself! Job well done!

Private Exercises You Can Do In Public

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, I work a lot! How can I exercise more?

A. A simple way to incorporate more fitness into your life is to add a little extra push to your daily routine. For example, when you wake up, give your body a good stretch before you do anything else. If you're waiting in line squeeze your gluteus maximus muscles and sneak in some booty toning -- nobody will know! When you're walking up and down stairs, try skipping a step each time. You can also add in a quick squat workout by holding the squat position for a few seconds before you sit down.

Glen's Bottom Line: No excuses! Do more!

Stretching Facts You Need To Know

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, Should I stretch?

A. Make stretching a mandatory part of every workout. When muscles perform any exercise, they tighten and shorten as a result. Stretching can help maximize your range of motion. A simple warm-up walk while moving your arms in a circular motion is sufficient. When doing strength training, you could stretch each muscle group directly after performing each set. Do not stretch beyond the point where you begin to feel tightness in the muscle. Do not push through muscle resistance and never stretch to the point of discomfort or pain. Incorporate stretching into your regular workout both before and after you're done. This will help reduce your chances of getting injured, feeling sore and getting muscle cramps

Glen's Bottom Line: Stretch it out!

Flex Your Yoga Muscles

Ask glen!

Q. Glen, Is there anything else I can add to my exercise routine?

A. Try adding a little yoga into your schedule. The physical benefits include becoming more aware of your body's posture and alignment, improved flexibility, increase in endurance, increase in strength and resiliency, and improvement in balance, just to name a few. Yoga can have an impact on your mental health as well. It helps promote calmness and stress reduction. Yoga can make a huge difference to your life. Try signing up for a class.

Be Reasonable! Your Nutrition Depends on it....

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen,

A. Goal setting plays a huge role in helping you stick with exercise. The best way to go about it is to choose an attainable goal. Don't give yourself a week to look like the Incredible Hulk. Make your resolutions realistic. Break down your huge goal into smaller, less intimidating ones. Then, as you reach each milestone, reward yourself with a non-food treat. Make sure to give yourself time to be proud of each step you're taking

Glen's Bottom Line: Small Goals turn into big Goals

Workout Clothes! What Not To Wear......

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, What should I wear when I work out?

A. Choosing the proper fitness attire is important for both comfort and safety. Whether you prefer loose t-shirts and shorts or tighter tees and spandex, make sure it feels good to you and that it's appropriate for the activity you are doing. Proper shoes are vital for protecting your feet. Make sure to change your shoes regularly. Also, be very picky when it comes to socks. The wrong socks can have you screaming in blister pain. Choose socks that are made for your specific exercise of choice. The most important thing to remember when dressing for fitness is comfort

Glen's Bottom line: Buy your shoes from The Athlete's Foot

Six Meals A Day Is The Best Way!

Ask Glen!

Q.Glen, How many meals should I eat a Day?

A. Just because we've been raised to eat three big meals a day doesn't mean it's the right way. Research shows the best way to keep your metabolism revved up is to eat small, frequent meals. When you wake up, enjoy a balanced breakfast. Within a few hours, enjoy a mid-morning snack. Come lunchtime, treat yourself to a sandwich and soup or a burger and side salad. By 3:00 or 4:00, you'll be ready for an afternoon snack. Dinner should consist of a protein, a healthy carb and a vegetable. If you get hungry following supper, indulge in a smart dessert like fruit.

Glen's Bottom Line: Eat Eat eat!!

Stairway To Weight-Loss Heaven

Aak Glen!

Q. Glen, How can I burn some extra calories?

A. A great way to burn extra calories is to use the stairs instead of the elevator. If it's been awhile since you exercised, start off slow. Set some goals for yourself. For example, if you only have three flights to ascend, then set a goal to go up and down the stairs at least four times throughout the day. Then keep increasing the times as you get more adjusted. If, however, your destination is 20 floors up, then set a goal to climb five flights and use the elevator to ascend the rest. As you get more fit, it will get easier. Keep adding more floors to your daily climb.

Glen's Bottom Line: Walk don't Ride!

No Parking! You're in Luck

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, Any tips on exercising?

A. When it comes to fitness, little efforts add up big time. Exercising is not reserved for the gym. Every time your body moves, it counts. Instead of spending time driving around the parking lot or waiting for the next person to get out of a spot close to your destination, park far away. Do this everywhere you go, and you'll end up adding in some good calorie-burning time without even hitting the gym. As an added bonus, your car will be less likely to get scratched!

Are You Really Hungry?

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, When I smell food or talk about food I get really hungry! What's wrong?

A. It's not always your stomach that's giving you that hunger sign. Sometimes stress, boredom, depression or just having food nearby can make you think you're hungry. The best way to tell the difference is to become aware of the physical signs of hunger. Physical hunger is a call by the body to fill a need for fuel. Once you eat, your hunger should go away. If it doesn't, chances are, you're dealing with emotional hunger. Try to pay attention to what your stomach feels like when it's hungry. For example, right when you wake up in the morning. Take some time to really pay attention to that feeling. The next time you think you're hungry, remember what you felt. This will help you make healthier decisions

Glen's Bottom Line:Dont eat because you think your hungry!

How 2 Get Back On The Diet Wagon

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, I keep falling off my diet! Any suggestions?

A. Eating healthy and dieting are two different things. Learning how to eat healthy means you never have to worry about falling off the dieting wagon. The reason most diets fail is because of the guilt factor. Once on a diet, you might feel deprived of your favorite foods. Inevitably, one day you might eat it and feel like you've ruined your whole diet. If you learn how to eat balanced, nutritious meals, then you'll never have to worry about messing up. The best thing to do when you splurge on your favorite treats is to enjoy them and then go back to eating the healthy foods that really do your body good.

Glen's Bottom line: If you fall off your horse get back in the saddle! Ride............

Just A Veggie A Day

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, I love meat everyday! When should I eat my veggies?

A. You don't have to be a vegetarian to enjoy a meat-free day every now and then. Try to set aside one or two days a week to substitute meat with something healthier. Eating this way once a week or more can add up to a lot in the long run. Diets high in saturated fat, found mainly in meat and high-fat dairy products, increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Going meatless for a day will help bring variety into your diet. It will also save you money.

Glen's Bottom Line: Eat your veggies!

You May Have A Drinking Problem!

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, I do not drink enough water any suggestions?

A. Health and water go hand in hand, and when you're thirsty, nothing beats the benefits of drinking water. However, there are times when you may crave a little extra flavor. Instead of turning to a sugary soft drink to quench your thirst, take a chug of some vegetable juice. It's an easy way to include veggies in your diet. You can also try a refreshing fruit smoothie or add some lemon or cucumbers to your water. Another great option is tea. There are so many delicious flavors that your taste buds will never get bored.

Glen's Bottom Line: Drink up!

Strike Oil & Still Lose Weight!

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, Is Oil oil good for you?

A. A healthy dose of olive oil can go a long way when it comes to your health. Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fat and antioxidants like chlorophyll, carotenoids and vitamin E. Recent research has now provided proof that consuming olive oil can help lower cholesterol and actually help your body maintain lower weight. Try adding a little olive oil to your recipes, making sure you watch your portions. While replacing other fats in your diet with olive oil can help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack, it's still a fat and calories still count.

Glen's Bottom Line: Oil up!
