Diabetics More Prone to Depression

Being diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes dramatically increases a person's risk of suffering from severe depression, a new study finds. Published in the journal Diabetes Care, the study was conducted by Ohio University researchers. Based on findings from the medical histories of several hundred diabetic patients, researchers concluded that depression may afflict a whopping 25% of all diabetics nationwide. Depression rates appeared to be similar across all ethnic groups, while women and middle-aged diabetics were slightly more prone than men and younger diabetics. Among those diabetics who were diagnosed with depression, more than half reported taking antidepressant medications, while nearly one-fifth sought help in the form of alternative supplement and behavioral therapies.
