Prevent Fitness Ruts

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, I get so bored doing the same exercise routine day in and day out! What next?

A. Change your exercise program on a regular basis. After awhile, the excitement of starting something new wears off and boredom kicks in. The best way to beat monotony is by keeping your workout new and fun. When you find yourself starting to make excuses for missing workouts then, chances are, it's time for a change. Make it a point to mix things up to stay motivated

Glen's Bottom Line: Confuse your muscles!

A Smart Substitution for Juice

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, I drink a lot of juice! Should I be worrieed about sugar?

A.Yes, Choose whole fruit over juice. While some juices may be rich in minerals, vitamins, fiber and calcium, they're also loaded with calories. An 8-ounce glass of orange juice has 122 calories. Other juices contain excessive amounts of sugar. Get your fruit fix from fresh whole fruits instead of juice. Eat an apple. Enjoy an orange. Consume fruit in its natural form to avoid getting any unnecessary additives and preservatives.

Glen's Bottom Line: Eat an Apple!

Soy Can Save Your Life!

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, Is Soy really good for you?

A. Reap the benefits of soy. Soy beans contain protein and are chock full of calcium, iron, zinc, fiber, omega 3 fatty acids and other health-enhancing components. In addition to improving heart health, preventing cancer and strengthening bones, soy also lowers cholesterol. Soy milk, soybeans, textured soy protein and tofu are all great sources of this food.

Glen's Bottom Line: Eat more Soy!

Great Weight Loss Rewards

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, I am finally seeing results Can I cheat now?

A. You deserve a pat on the back, and you need to make it a point to get it. Setting milestones and rewarding yourself every time you meet them can help you achieve your ultimate goal. Try giving yourself a reward every time you meet a mini-milestone. Treat yourself to a candlelit soak in the tub, go see a movie with a friend, enjoy a new CD or give yourself a spa day. Celebrating the smaller victories will help make your fitness journey more fun and will help make your long-term fitness goals more attainable

Glen's Bottom Line: Reward yourself! Job well done!

No Parking! You're in Luck

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, Any tips on exercising?

A. When it comes to fitness, little efforts add up big time. Exercising is not reserved for the gym. Every time your body moves, it counts. Instead of spending time driving around the parking lot or waiting for the next person to get out of a spot close to your destination, park far away. Do this everywhere you go, and you'll end up adding in some good calorie-burning time without even hitting the gym. As an added bonus, your car will be less likely to get scratched!

Are You Really Hungry?

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, When I smell food or talk about food I get really hungry! What's wrong?

A. It's not always your stomach that's giving you that hunger sign. Sometimes stress, boredom, depression or just having food nearby can make you think you're hungry. The best way to tell the difference is to become aware of the physical signs of hunger. Physical hunger is a call by the body to fill a need for fuel. Once you eat, your hunger should go away. If it doesn't, chances are, you're dealing with emotional hunger. Try to pay attention to what your stomach feels like when it's hungry. For example, right when you wake up in the morning. Take some time to really pay attention to that feeling. The next time you think you're hungry, remember what you felt. This will help you make healthier decisions

Glen's Bottom Line:Dont eat because you think your hungry!

How 2 Get Back On The Diet Wagon

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, I keep falling off my diet! Any suggestions?

A. Eating healthy and dieting are two different things. Learning how to eat healthy means you never have to worry about falling off the dieting wagon. The reason most diets fail is because of the guilt factor. Once on a diet, you might feel deprived of your favorite foods. Inevitably, one day you might eat it and feel like you've ruined your whole diet. If you learn how to eat balanced, nutritious meals, then you'll never have to worry about messing up. The best thing to do when you splurge on your favorite treats is to enjoy them and then go back to eating the healthy foods that really do your body good.

Glen's Bottom line: If you fall off your horse get back in the saddle! Ride............

Just A Veggie A Day

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, I love meat everyday! When should I eat my veggies?

A. You don't have to be a vegetarian to enjoy a meat-free day every now and then. Try to set aside one or two days a week to substitute meat with something healthier. Eating this way once a week or more can add up to a lot in the long run. Diets high in saturated fat, found mainly in meat and high-fat dairy products, increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Going meatless for a day will help bring variety into your diet. It will also save you money.

Glen's Bottom Line: Eat your veggies!

Color your Plate!

Ask Glen!

Q.Glen, I trying to eat right but when I go out to eat my plate always looks so bland! meat potatoes etc...what should I do?

A. Make every meal a masterpiece by adding fresh new colors to it everyday. Foods with the most colors tend to be the best for you, such as all the variety of vibrant fruits and veggies. The rich colors found in the skin of these brightly colored fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants which offer a host of health benefits. On the contrary, foods with the least amount of color are the ones we tend to eat the most of, such as meats, potatoes and bread. Adding more color to your plate will help aid in disease prevention and weight maintenance.

Glen's Bottom line: fruit, vegetables eat them!!!!

Practice Proper Portions

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, I am eating very healthy! But still gaining weight, Am I doing anything wrong?

A. Maybe, Many of us are so focused on what we should and shouldn't eat that we forget the importance of simply eating the right amount. The truth is if you watch your portions and eat properly you won't have to spend so much time worrying about the foods you should be avoiding. Try serving your meal on a smaller plate or use familiar objects to picture how much you should eat. For example, three ounces of meat is the size of a deck of cards and one ounce of cheese is the size of four dice.

Glen's Bottom Line: Watch the amount of what you eat!

Good Morning Metabolism!

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen,How do I start a healthy lifestyle?

A.The key to a healthy lifestyle begins with a healthy breakfast. A good, hearty meal first thing in the morning is important for refueling your body after a night's sleep. People who skip breakfast experience a drop in blood sugar level, fatigue, irritability and poor concentration throughout the day. Eating a healthy breakfast can raise metabolism by as much as 10 percent. The number-one reason people skip the first meal of the day is time. The truth is, a healthy breakfast can be prepared in mere minutes. A simple bowl of cereal with fruit, a half a turkey sandwich, or a quick smoothie will do the trick.

Glen's Bottom Line: Kick start your morning eat breakfast!

Conquer the Buffet

Ask Glen!

Q. Glen, How can I overcome thetemtation of the Buffet?

A.Here's How: If you're trying to reduce your food intake, probably the worst meal choice you can pick is a buffet - after all, they call it "all you can eat." However, if you end up at one for lunch, or at a work or social function, decide on only three or four items and make at least one a salad or vegetable (excluding potatoes!). If it's a party, don't stand near the buffet the whole time, and under no circumstances should you wear loose clothes! If you're uncomfortable, then you've eaten too much.

Glen's Bottom Line: No buffet!
